What the bump wore in Cape Town

Monday, April 22, 2013

At about 18.5 weeks my bump suddenly popped! It is exciting to finally look pregnant and not just feel pregnant. I love having a bump - a beautiful, round reminder of the two tiny miracles growing their hearts out inside me. Touching that bump (and I do touch it all the time), rubbing it, tapping it, holding it really feels like I am connecting with these little beings, reminding them I am here. And just feeling that bump (believe me, with 2 x 500g cublets inside I can feel it without touching it at all - imagine two heavy balls inside your tummy!) sends a glow down my spine.

My bump has certainly growth a whole lot since then, but here are a few snaps of the bump around and about the Cape.

Garden wonderland

Sunday, April 21, 2013

When we were in the Cape, the husband and I (finally!) visited Babylonstoren. And it lived up to any expectation I had - a magical garden filled with varieties of fruits and veggies I had never heard of, multiple different gardens of glowing produce, and set up in such a way that we felt we were wondering through a secret garden, a stumbled-upon gem that made me want to get planting.

We didn't eat at the acclaimed Babel (it is closed on Mondays) but had a light lunch at the Glaskas which is located inside a greenhouse. The menu was simple, the food was scrumptious and I particularly liked the fresh juice choice - red, green or yellow. Any fresh fruit and vegs ripe for picking and corresponding with the colour is added to the juice.

I left Babylonstoren inspired - inspired by the simplicity of this well established location. Inspired by the way everything is grown in their expansive gardens that you are free to wonder through, and inspired by the creativity that comes through in every element of the experience.

Winter has arrived! It's cold (wet) and dark in Joburg. What do you have planned - we have a busy one: tonight we have Grazia (where I work)'s first birthday party at my bosses house, tomorrow morning we are headed to the next level of dog training and then we are going to Michael McIntyre (yay). Sunday we are all headed to parents for our lovely Sunday lunch and the debut of mum's new furniture!

Greyton wedding weekend

Sunday, April 14, 2013

Our trip down to CT a few weeks ago was inspired by a wedding in the far away little town of Greyton. I had never been to the little town and it made for the perfect setting for a gathering of old friends, a countryside escape and celebrating love.

We stayed in a wonderful lodge called Wheatlands. Set on a farm, we were surrounding my grazing cows and rolling hills. The owners interrupted our swim to make us taste the fresh tomatoes they had juts picked for our breakfast the next day (and the hearty breakfasts were damn good).

Greyton town itself is tiny and quaint in some ways, a little run down in others. We found a cafe that served the sweetest freshly squeezed carrot juice I have ever tasted.

The ceremony took place in this lovely old church in town.

The reception was on the beautiful Oaks Estate.

Ps. We were served some of the most delicious wedding food I have ever tasted. The main was lamb, grown on the brides farm especially for her wedding!

Congratulations Hannes and Judy!

TGIF! Do I say that every week? I don't have much planed for the weekend but I know before I know it, it will be Monday again. Tonight I am headed to meet the husband at his work for a dinner, tomorrow I intend on being extremely lazy and then am going to SAFW. Sunday will be as Sundays should be - late brunch and lying horizontal.

Deliciousness in unexpected places

Thursday, April 11, 2013

While I am a big fan of (and pinner!) on Pinterest, I seldom go further than a pin. In other words, I don't attempt to replicate the amazing things that inspire me to save them on my collection of online pin boards.

However, yesterday was one of those right-place-right-time scenarios where I came across this delicious looking salad just as I was about to pop out to do my Woolies shopping. It looked quick and easy and healthy and delicious (four requirements for me in the kitchen). It turned out so well in fact that I have saved the recipe away in my actual recipe book and will be replicating it for my book club dinner next week.

ginger, citrus + black sesame carrots w/ edamame and avocado salad - head on over to The First Mess for the Recipe

PS. Woolies had no sesame seeeds, fresh garlic, limes or organges. I substituted the seseame seeds with seed mix, I used pre-crushed garlic instead of fresh garlic, I substituted lime juice for lemon juiceand I left out the organge juice altogether (one has to get a bit creative when groccery shopping in one shop over a quick office break). We also added in  chicken breast. It still tasted yummy :)
