Friday!

Friday, September 28, 2012

Shoo. A late post from me today. I drove to all corners of Gauteng today. Well, not quite, but I drove on many roads I have never been on, to places I have never been. And in this case that is not necessarily a good thing. While I was on my excursion to nowhere, I squeezed in a lunch at a Woolies cafe and these words were written on the wall: "Live simply. Eat well. Say no to nonsense. And smile."  Nice advice. Although sometimes a bit fo nonsense is good.

What are your plans for the weekend? Can you believe it is the end of September already!? I blinked my eyes and it was gone... Perhaps the world turns faster in Spring.

When things work together

Monday, September 24, 2012

I love it when a Tuesday feels like a Monday. Most of my Monday was spent unpacking and sorting out our apartment. We now have a glorious built in bookshelf which is being used for a combination of books, pictures and little curiosities like a ceramic paper aeroplane, our Diana camera, my Reunion stacked bowls by Pieke Bergmans for Rosenthal, old wooden boxes and gold army men. Arranging things and belongings is never as easy as it seems - the trick is to make it look effortless, but to consider elements of space, colour and size. I am taking inspiration from these arrangements below.

Lovely long weekend

Friday, September 21, 2012

I started my day with an inspiring morning at another USB We Read For You talks. Johann Coetzee, author of It's About Time, took us on a whirlwind journey through life, talking about concepts such as the definition of "enough" and "rather be happy today." It was an hour of thought-provoking reflection...

What are your plans for the weekend? It's a long weekend here in South Africa, because Monday is National Braai Day. Yip, that's right, a holiday for braaing. We are staying in Jo'burg - soaking up the gorgeous weather, unpacking, and making delicious food.

I have been eating an excessive amount of avos lately and want to try this idea. And then this idea.

If you are going away for the weekend, here's a good trip for packing

Who said tools can't be cool? Great place for maps and notebooks too.

Adult treehouses are a fabulous idea

Drop waists, jewel embellishments and full skirts - three trends I'll be rocking this summer

Wish we were staying in this apartment when we go to NY

A baby goat. Just because it's cute.

And I know the year is almost over, but how cool is this calendar!

Have a good one lovely llamas xoxo

NY in a month

Thursday, September 20, 2012

This time next month I will be strolling down my favourite streets, satisfying many cravings, and lapping up the city. The air will be crispy and the pavements scattered with orange leaves.  I am picturing leisurely mornings at Cafe Gitane, NY Magazine in hand, husband on the arm, and people watching like now where on earth. But then I remember that nothing is particularly leisurely about New York. Mad rush dash hop scotch jump run duck run run run. Cool coats and hot boots. Bright lips. Steaming drinks will be a must - I am thinking a morning coffee from 9th Street Espresso or Abraco where the same guy with mad crazy grey hair will be serving coffee 3 years later.

{available here}

I have already planned my first meal - we land early in the morning and will head to Freemans for a brunch of bloody Marys and artichoke dip. Hungry just thinking about it. Pork buns from Momofuku. Burgers from the good old Spotted Pig. We have friends to see and babies to meet (one due to be born on the day we arrive!), bridges to cross, and things to buy, and things to see and smell and do and eat. New tastes to be tasted, drinks to be sipped, suns to set and rise, and adventures to be had...

I love going back to NY. A place I once called home. Everything changes while I am away. And yet is exactly the same.

Can. Not. Wait.

Time to write a poem

Nobody will stop you from creating. Do it tonight. Do it tomorrow. That is the way to make your soul grow — whether there is a market for it or not! The kick of creation is the act of creating, not anything that happens afterward. I would tell all of you watching this screen: Before you go to bed, write a four line poem. Make it as good as you can. Don’t show it to anybody. Put it where nobody will find it. And you will discover that you have your reward. Kurt Vonnegut

Chicken or the egg

Is it just me, or does Marc Jacobs' SS2013 collection look distinctly South African? Perhaps it's those fab prints? Or the awesome headscarves? Either way I can just picture these looks strutting their stuff on the streets of Jo'burg.

PS. I want that bikini!

Have a lovely week pretty faces.

Friday time

Friday, September 14, 2012

Hi little giddy goats. I have that reached that point in my day when the work left to achieve does not match the energy levels required to achieve it. Secretly I want to rush home and unpack boxes and hang pictures and throw away stuff. Nerdy, I know, compared to sipping cocktails on a rooftop somewhere while watching the spring sunset. But after four months of renovating (yes, that is FOUR MONTHS!), we finally moved back home this week.

What are your plans for the weekend? In between unpacking, I shall be both planning a kitchen tea and attending a kitchen tea and Sunday will be the usual family affair at my parents' house. I wish weekends had three days.
