hello weekend

Thursday, June 28, 2012

Whew. Each week seems to speed by faster than the first. That's what happens when you have a million things to still do. We were discussing The Age of Miracles at bookclub which is a story about what happens to the world when time slows down. I haven't read the book yet wouldn't it be handy if we could slow down time on demand.

How are you going to spend everyone's favorite two days of the week? We are kicking ours off with dinner chez Tshepo (rumour has it it will be rustic and relaxed - perfect I say!). On Saturday, the husband and I are knob hunting (the common term for looking for doorknobs and kitchen cupboard handles).

Here are some nice things I found that you might like too:

I love Jo'burg, and I love it when others love Jo'burg

I love that our sun shines even though the air is crispy cool - take a look at Europe's sunshine map

Luggage scooters are one of those inventions that make me think some one is taking the mickey

A cocoon made of tape seems much more reasonable to me

Cake can make you do strange things (even if you are not four years old)

Hot knits (two words that don't often go together)

I would like to be this organised when I pack but perhaps I should just realise that is never going to happen

Jon Hamm. In a tux.

This little tipple looks fresh and delicious

MKA's most memorable outfits

Sugar for my honey (things always taste better when they look pretty)

And feel like a little chuckle and insight into the world of a bride? Cheska's wedding planning blog post on Elle had me giggling over my morning tea

Have a lovely day little star fish.

The Raas

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

When we are in India (one week to go - WOOP!) we are staying at all sorts of places - from family-run bed and breakfasts, to old Indian palaces (that look rather grand on the outside but not quite so grand on the inside), and simple urban hotels.

When we are in Jodhpur we are staying in a gorgoeus little boutique hotel - The Raas (thanks Erika for the recommendation!). Think modern Indian chic set in a sweltering desert - that luxurious pool will be our oasis after adventures around the blue city.

Guest Post: Can I live in your wardrobe?

I want to live in these girls' wardrobe and dress up in their clothes everyday!

Oh hello sporty knit and cool collar.

I need to layer like this.

A little bit of lace mystery

That necklace, oh my!

Oh peplum, I do adore you.

And just because I will never be as cool as her!

Winter things to warm your little souls

Yummy soups (the soups from Jozi market at Pirates on Saturdays are my favourite!)

 Hot drinks (and hot dates)

Remember this winter post?

Tea birds

I usually start my morning with a steaming cup of green tea. How wonderful would it be if the tea bag spread its wings as it dives into the water! These origami tea bags are the packaging and product design concept by the Russian designer Natalia Ponomareva. Genius.

Have a lovely Monday.

Have a love-filled weekend

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Hello lovelies. It is Friday! Oh yes!. I don't know about you but this week sped by in the blink of an eye. What are your plans for the weekend? The main thing on my agenda is fabric shopping with the girls for Cheska's bridesmaids' dresses. So I thought I would do a wedding-inspired Friday post. Enjoy**

These dresses are so romantic (the peachy shades are so pretty)

Letterpress invitations are a wedding classic

A cute invite which tells a love story

This bride wore her mother's wedding dress

What a wonderful way to welcome home newly weds

Take a look at these pics of a wedding set against a New York skyline

Love the idea of one long table (especially if it's in Tuscany!)

And the simplicity of a city hall wedding

These guys take awesome wedding pictures

Indian Summer

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

Today is the shortest day of the year in the Southern hemisphere. It certainly feels like the middle of winter in Johannesburg (although "winter" is a relative term - the sun is shining outside, the skies are blue and it is about 19 degrees Celsius today). Nonetheless, the husband and I have decided to head north - we are going to India in July for a full three weeks.(Picked up our visas today - YIPPEE!). We are starting off in Mumbai ("bring your gumboots, it's monsoon in Bombay" my friend warned us) and then travelling through Rajasthan, the ancient desert of India.

 {via here}

Right now we are planning our adventure - booking accommodation at places with exotic names like Hotel Diggi Palace and Gulaab Niwaas Palace, in towns with exotic names like JaipurUdaipur, Pushkar and Jodhpur. We are going to see the Taj Mahal and we are even going to catch an over night train.

Neither of us has ever been so a whole new world awaits. I cannot wait!

This is india as seen from space during Diwali, the festival of lights. Isn't it gorgeous?

Have you been to India before? Please send us any tips or your favourite places.

Well, my telephone rang it would not stop
It’s President Kennedy callin’ me up
He said, “My friend, Bob, what do we need to make the country grow”?
I said, “My friend, John, “Brigitte Bardot”

Warm & Glad

Sunday, June 17, 2012

I found my new favourite coffee shop in Jo'burg this weekend - Warm & Glad. Don't you love the name? (Although the husband keeps referring to it as Warm & Fuzzy). It's all about food (delicious), media (think vintage vinyls and wireless), culture (hello cool prints and a wide selection of international magazines), and coffee.

The spot is filled with light, large glass windows over looking Jan Smuts Avenue, marble tops and Persian rugs. It is cool and I know where I will hanging out on Saturdays.

Happy Fathers Day

Our Dad has always had a moustache. It suits him (I cannot imagine him without one!). And it is all lovely and grey now. This card would be perfect for him (thanks sisters (Cheska and Alex) for passing it on to me!)

Friday Friday Friday

Friday, June 15, 2012

We are kicking the weekend off with dinner at Good Luck Club (love this spot, particularly the kitten wallpaper). And tomorrow we are going to a party to celebrate our friends marriage (in between the hunt for taps for our kitchen, entertaining friends from abroad, and of course, supporting the Boks against England).

What are you getting up to?

{via here}

These collages are quite surreal (wouldn't it be fun to do one yourself)

Great thing to do on a Jo'burg winter's weekend - cycle tour of Soweto

I want these pants!

A pocket manfriend is kind of creepy, kind of cool

The things James Bond and Don Draper have in common (le sigh!)

Who do you think is the most powerful celebrity?

A surrealist house that plays tricks with your mind

Quirky packaging design (I love the skipping rope shopping bags)

Of course a bubblegum installation will be full of pretty colours

A Parisian apartment left untouched for over 70 years (many a treasure in there that I woudl love to get my hands one)

Have a wonderful weekend chicklets.
Wrap up warm or bask in the sunshine.

5 months to go...

Monday, June 11, 2012

The count down to Cheska's wedding has well and truly begun!

A few week ago we went with Cheska to try on dresses a the newly opened Pronovias store in Sandton. The experience was wonderful (think dress-fitters, runways, digital selections, private rooms, a selection that goes on for rows and rows), and the dresses are breathtakingly beautiful. I want to post every photo I took of Cheska in all sorts of creations but promised bridey-to-be I would just pick one.

Doesn't she look amazing!?
