I ART soccer

Monday, May 31, 2010

The World Cup has inspired some fantastic (and not so fantastic) creative work - be it in the form of cheeky ad campaigns, fashion or graffiti. The Official Art Poster Edition of the Fifa 2010 World Cup has been created by artists all over the world, with many from Africa, and South Africa including Kentridge and Dumas. These are one of my favourite soccer things is and not just because these will look better on my wall than I will look in a soccer jersey. They are available from David Krut Publishing, see the full collection here.

10 days to go!

As if we need any reason to look forward to the World Cup...

The start of summer

Friday, May 28, 2010

On the other side of the big wide world this weekend marks the start of summer. Happy Memorial Day weekend to all my friends in New York! I can just imagine all the hot-weather antics you are getting up to. And to all my readers in South Africa, happy chilly Autumn weekend!

Unite Mzansi Unite!

Adidas has created a giant new Bafana Bafana 2010 FIFA World Cup jersey for all South Africans to sign to show their support for the host nation. If you don't catch the jersey on its national truck tour of South Africa you can sign the jersey online here only up until the end of May.

Curiousity cabinet

I find this apartment in Brooklyn so wonderfully fascinating. It is filled with collections of vintage mirrors, books, paintings and intricate objects that make me want to stay longer and explore. The chandeliers and beautiful rugs, and of course the glam couple, add an air of elegance to this old-world space.

Speaking of spaces, I can't wait to go to Rooms on View at Sandton Convention Centre this weekend and take home lots of inspirational ideas!

Theurel & Thomas Pâtisserie

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

The re-branding of Theurel & Thomas, a French pâtisserie  in San Pedro, Mexico, has been beautifully done by design agency Anagram. The simplicity and cleanliness of the white provides a striking backdrop for the colourful delights on offer. It makes me crave a macaroon!

I like this

The Chalk Guy

Walking around the streets of New York you often come across chalk masterpieces. I remember a guy who used to draw amazing images on the corner of 5th Avenue and 9th Street. While I never saw any of these myself, this chalk guy is pretty amazing!

An inspired collaboration

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

Last Thursday I went to the opening of Tiaan Nagel and Anatomy Design's revamped store at 44 Stanley Avenue. I love what Tiaan Nagel and Andrea Kleinloog (the talented force behind Anatomy Design) have done with the space: clean lines, sparse decor and of course, filled with beautiful clothes and objects. In fact, Anatomy Design's lamp won The Most Beautiful Object in south Africa award at the Design Indaba earlier this year. I have my eye on one of the round tables and a die-dipped shirt.

16 days to go!

The streets of Jo'burg are bursting with World Cup spirit, from flag vendors on street corners to offices adorned with support. Even the bus ads look cool!

Dear Aynsley

Monday, May 24, 2010

My very first friend in NY celebrates her birthday today, now on the other side of the world from me, in Canada.

Dear Aynsley. May the frosting on your cake forever runneth over. May you laugh louder, dream longer and love harder. I wish I was there to celebrate with you! To clink your champagne glass and to wish you a year ahead that is filled with things you can't even imagine at this point in time.

Night Away

Going away to the Magaliesberg for a night made the weekend seem longer and nourished the soul. It's so wonderful waking up and having breakfast surrounded by fresh air, mountains and vervet monkeys.

Happy Weekend!

Friday, May 21, 2010

Tomorrow we are off to a friend's farm in the Magaliesberg for a night. I am so looking forward to getting out of town, taking long, lazy walks in the veld, sitting around a fire and listening to night sounds not generated by a city!
