Ms Pigott Speaking: On scrabble, crosswords and borborygmus

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

I love words; especially those not everyone uses.

And I love scrabble, particularly playing with an old scrabble set with wooden letters.

But have to admit that I hate crossword puzzles- I just cannot get enthusiastic about trying to unravel clues someone else has very cleverly made up. I do have the romantic picture in my mind of a dear brother of mine and his wife sitting on their beautiful upstairs balcony, steaming coffee mugs at their elbows companionably doing the morning crossword... but still it does not tempt me to become an enthusiast.

I have favourite words like rococo. And have you ever thought of the opposite of disgruntled? I love the thought of being gruntled - such a warm snugly sort of word! Recently I have been given a book that contains 120 words you should know and was pleased that I did know quite a few of them. One I didn’t know and the book termed “delightful but useless” is delightful- borborygmus- it means stomach rumbling- what else could it mean?

Introducing Ms Pigott

{From here}

Bury and Discover is delighted to introduce a new guest blogger who goes by the name Ms Pigott. Ms Pigott abhors routine chores so do not expect a weekly post from her, she will rather drop in on the blog when she feels so inclined.

Picture her as your fabulous aunt who wore head scarves while holidaying in Capri before they were cool. I suspect she dons glasses as an excuse to wear diamond encrusted frames that rival the sparkles on her fingers. She has travelled the world, is the perfect homemaker, and can probably out-bake your granny. Above all, Ms Pigott has the most impeccable manners.

I hope you enjoy her posts!

PS. This is not a photo of Ms Pigott but I would not be surprised if her underclothing resembled those above

Literally freezing

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

Yip. That's right. The temperature gauge in my car read 0 as I drove to work. It is even snowing in many parts of the country! (This is a novelty for us warm-weathered souls in South Africa). The clouds in Joburg are so ominous I wouldn't be surprised to see flurries outside my office window. Brrr. To be honest, I actually love crispy, cold weather - a perfect excuse to layer textures, don hats, wrap scarves and cuddle up.

Here's my pick of sweaters for the occasion:

Indian dreams

Sunday, August 5, 2012

We have been back from our trip to India for almost two weeks and it now seems but a dream of midnight rickshaw rides, freshly squeezed lime juice, throbbing streets and sweltering heat, the sweetest lassis in all the land and flying peacocks and swimming monkeys, madness, chaos, camels and cows, and curries that make your taste buds tingle and ancient palaces and crumbling temples, and millions of people...

It is hard to capture the experience of travelling to a new place. You can't quite describe that hair-raising feeling of near misses on highways, or the way your breath was taken away when you first saw at the Taj Mahal through a misty morning haze, or riding on the back of a motor bike zipping through the streets of an old town, or the way the boiling chai tea burnt your lips as you sipped out of less-than-clean clay cups. Even photographs can't seem capture the incessant hooting on the streets or calls to prayer, the pungent smells and glorious tastes.

While I am still am still sorting through our 2374 photographs, here are ten Instagram pics we took...

A camel in the streets of Udaipur

A security guard at the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur

Mehrangarh Fort from our hotel in Jodhpur, The Raas

 Paint powder in Pushkar

 Rajasthani art

 Pigeons in Jaipur

Lattice work of the holy man's tomb at Fatehpur Sikri

In the mosque, Jama Masjid, at Fatehpur Sikri

Have a good week lovely readers.

It's the weekend baby!

Friday, August 3, 2012

Hello fair friends. What are you getting up to this weekend? We have a dinner with Rochelle and Ewoud, a brunch and a lunch and a whole lot of house stuff stuff to take care of (the renovation is still going on but we are hoping to finish up next week!).The weather in Johannesburg looks gorgeous for the next two days - good timing Mother Nature and I already have the almost-spring feeling in my bones.

I am completely caught up in the Olympics, and South Africa's three gold medals (*so proud*) probably has something to do with that (although I have been finding the weight lifting rather fascinating too!).

For all of you who missed the rowing race yesterday (which is being touted as the Greatest Olympics Rowing Finish Ever), you can watch it here. And even though I knew the outcome my heart was racing when I watched this - love the gumption of our team.

Paperless Post has created some great invitations for Olympic viewing parties

As a non-athletic, non-sporty person, I find it amazing how the Olympians dedicate their entire lives to a sport. It makes one think about the age old talent-versus-perspiration debate. This is an interesting article on the concept of talent.

Have a good one little bunnies.

PS. Speaking of bunnies, check out my latest pinboard!

So in honour of my first day, here is my round up of my new job vibe -
