Soccer City

The first of the two World Cup semi finals is taking place tonight. And while this game featuring Argentina and Korea is now long gone I am already feeling nostalgic for the World Cup gees that engulfed Johannesburg. This was my first visit to Soccer City and it really is as breathtaking as they say when you arrive there and see the beautiful calabash emerging out of nowhere. It did happen to be the coldest day of the year in Johannesburg but the despite the chattering teeth it was a great experience.

One year today

Bury and Discover began today a year ago. I remember it clearly: I was getting married in 2 months and I was leaving in New York in a month. Mighty big changes. There are no dramatic milestones to mark today (and I miss them!) expect for a year of blogging. And 10 months of marriage. And 10 months and 27 days of living back in Johannesburg. It's amazing how quickly time speeds by and I wonder where I will be this time next year...

Randlords

I can without doubt say that this is the coolest place in Jo'burg. Randlords, located on the 22nd floor of a building in Braamfontein, opened to the public this weekend. When I stepped inside I felt I was back in Manhattan until I looked out at the 360 degree view across the city: it is distinctly Johannesburg. With beautifully designed interiors, awesome beats and great service this place is sure to become a hot spot before the end of winter. But with two outdoor wooden decks and large lounges, in summer this will be the place to be!

Strawberries and Cream

All the football has been such a distraction that it's easy to forget life still goes on. Today is the Wimbledon Men's Final: one o my favourite events in the sporting calendar. It's cold and gray outside so we will be buying strawberries and cream and snuggling up under a duvet to watch. I usually root for Federer (I am a big fan) but since he is out I shall support Berdych, the underdog!

Happy Independence Day!

July 4th was one of my favourite days in the American calendar - it's summer, it's a party, and of course there are fireworks. I will certainly miss the festivities this year and wishing all my friends in New York a wonderful celebration!

Here are some pics from July 4th last year. What  a great memory: we started out in Bobo's upstairs garden with traditional July 4th food, then strolled over to Soho House for sundowners, we made our way up to a riverside club in Midtown to watch fireworks then all the way back downtown for late night karaoke at a dodgy little spot at the bottom of China Town. The night ended up with an early morning Chinese feast at Hopkee...

Malva

Here are some more pics of Malva, the home of the CupCake Factory that I blogged about here. It is filled with interior objects like mirrors, plates, mugs and pictures and there is a clothing section at the back (I have my eye on those patterned shirts). You can also make your own love-letters on a big wooden table full of stickers and ideas. The DJ spinning vinyls added to the cool. So pop by on a weekend and experience the city's transformation first hand.
