Would you move to Braamfontein?

Monday, March 15, 2010

I saw this loft apartment in House and Leisure a few months ago and just came across it again in this NY Times article. Jo'burg born and bred Adam Levy bought a Braamfontein office block back in 2003 and has converted it into 7 loft apartments- including his own 2 floor pentouse on the top. Not only do I love Adam's apartment (wouldn't you want to wake up with that view over the city) but I love that he is passionate about revitalizing downtown Jo'burg!

Music, movies and MiBar

Sunday, March 14, 2010

There's nothing like a jam-packed weekend to make the days fly!

It started off with a farewell celebration at the Southern Sun Hyde Park bar. The pool deck is a great place to say goodbye to Jo'burg while watching the sun set over the city.

This was followed by another farewell at the recently opened MiBar in Rosebank. This bar is part of the MiWorld community- an online meets offline project whereby you register at Mi-world.co.za to gain access. The venue was fun and fresh and there was a great crowd saying goodbye as our friend heads off to Washington DC as part of the foreign office.

The husband and I went to see Alice in Wonderland on Saturday. This was a much anticipated event! The movie was enjoyable and 3-D enhances any viewing experience but I was expecting a little more warped darkness from Tim Burton.

The plan for Saturday night was to go to the house cooling of an old friend. The plan changed when we managed to get tickets for the Finley Quaye concert at music venue Tanz Cafe. It was wonderful to see him perform in front of a crowd of no more than 200 people!

Sunday was spent with good friends and fine food, and then watching American Idol. Just as Sundays should be.

Happy weekend!

May yours be filled with lazy days!

McFancy

How cool is this McDonalds packaging! It was designed by EatDrinkChic for The Cool Hunter as a pitch to McDonalds to be a pop-up store at fashion week. I love how large fashion brands have been playfully incorporated into all the different offerings but my favourite is the Paul Smith ice-cream cup!

This made me miss New York

Thursday, March 11, 2010

I received this email from a New York friend of mine today:

"We miss you. We were depressed by the winter weather a few weekends ago and seriously considered getting decked out and crashing a wedding at the St. Regis to spice things up. You would have been a perfect sidekick. Come visit soon and we'll find some trouble to get into."

Hopefully soon! But for now, here are a few pics I took of the city:

Sunset from the roof top of the Metropolitan Museum

View of lower Manhattan from Brooklyn

Sunset over Hudson River

City Hall

Central Park

Union Square by night

Empire State Building from roof top on East 12th Street

I love the old Victorian homes lining the streets of Cape Town and am always curious to have a peek inside. I was pleased to find this striking home of South African designer John Jacob Zwiegelaar of John Jacob Interiors. Take a look inside:

French doors upstairs and downstairs leading onto a perfect little garden

The dramatic lounge created with a monochromatic palette

Fresh fruit and flowers add colour in the kitchen

The main bedroom - even the dog matches!

Gorgeous guest bathroom

Love the effect of black and white tiles and dark grey walls
