Fall in

Friday, April 30, 2010

It feels like Autumn in Johannesburg. The leaves are almost all orange, the air is crispy cold and it is getting dark a little earlier. It is amazing how different Fall feels from Autumn. Perhaps it's a place association: Fall in New York is such a distinct season and not just a few, almost imperceptibly changing weeks between the end of Summer and the beginning of Winter. I'm a Summer child in my heart but the beginning of Autumn brings about a shiver of excitement - I can't wait to wrap up in warm fabrics, beautiful textures, and killer boots.

44 Stanley Avenue

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Here are some more pics from our Saturday morning at 44 Stanley Ave:

Love the soccer graffiti

Vespa celebrates 60 years

Jozi life newspaper

The husband on a cold morning

Salvation cafe: one of my favourite eating spots and delicious food every time

The menu: best burgers in Jo'burg hands-down, amazing fish cakes, and the soup was just yummy

The owner of studio+showroom holds the diamond ring mug. The husband and wife team stock wonderful design goodies from all over the world, including Muji; Pantone wallets, mugs and umbrellas; furniture designed by their friends in Hong Kong and beautiful books.

Sai Gon Pho: tiny home (there are only about 4 tables) of authentic, hearty Veitnemese dishes

More LEGO stuff

Those LEGO ads reminded me about the Lego business cards that I had seen on Wired last year. Aren't they the coolest business cards ever? I want to go and work at Lego just to get my name on a Lego person.

I want one

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

The world's teeniest, tiniest horse on the planet was born a last week at 6 pounds and 22 inches tall. I have always wanted a tiny pony and this one takes the cake!

Happy Freedom Day!

Enjoy this public holiday that marks South Africa's 16th year of democracy. The weather in Johannesburg is grey, wet and freezing - perfect not-going-to-work weather. I'm going to curl up at home with a pile of blankets, yummy food, the husband, books and movies.

Vo Vo Telo

Monday, April 26, 2010

44 Stanley Ave is one of my favourite places in Johannesburg and it keeps getting better. On Saturday the husband and I tried Vo Vo Telo, the new bakery/cafe that has opened there by the dapper, young owner/baker Mark Repton. Armed with their steaming cuppacinos we were much bettrer equipped to explore the rest of the stores and galleries over the ice-cold weekend. Vo Vo Telo serves coffee and tiny sweet treats at the moment and of course fresh, scrumptous bread. Word has it they will start serving breakfasts and lunch in May. I love the feel of the feel of the bakery, the name and the beautiful designs on the walls and T-shirts. An excuse to go to Stanley Ave every Saturday!

Dreamer

Thursday, April 22, 2010

Did you know that we spend six years of our lives dreaming... Isn't that a wonderful thought!

Have a dreamy weekend!

A beautiful space

I think this shoot by The Satorialist is beautiful. I love the antler trophy, the gold-framed mirror, and even the stuffed mongoose attacking a cobra. It doesn't look as if any one actually lives there but with a fireplace like that the space could easily be turned into a home.

2010 potholes

Well that's one way to look at it!

I also love the idea of British artist Pete Dungey who plants pretty gardens in potholes around Britain.

Pot of gold

There was the most amazing, breathtaking, magical sky over Sandton yesterday evening - two complete double rainbows. I took these pics from the roof of our building but they hardly do it justice!

La la la Coachella

Monday, April 19, 2010

One day I will don my hippy/rock/punk/festival get up and go to Coachella, the three day music festival in California. For now I ogle over the cool style that turns up there every year. Here are some of my favourite looks spotted by Refinery29:

These ads make me want to find my old LEGO

Since my father had three daughters he made sure we played with some boy toys - motor control cars, scale electrics, train sets and of, course, LEGO! Many hours were spent creating our Lego empire of houses, helicopters and hospitals. We bought a lot of our LEGO from a young guy who was selling his collection to save up for a motor bike.

The Eyjafjallajokull volcano

Saturday, April 17, 2010

These stunning photographs of the erruption of a volcano under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland depict the awe-inspring force of nature that is causing serious inconveniences around Europe.Volcanologists are predicting that the eruptions could be likely to continue for days or weeks or months.
